Plácido Domingo returns to Verona Arena

An Opera Festival with Big Names and Iconic Musical Numbers

Parliamo di

Plácido Domingo in Opera – Arena 100

Sunday, 6 August at 9pm

Jessica Pratt and Michele Pertusi, Mariangela Sicilia and Angelo Villari, Giulia Mazzola and Amartuvshin Enkhbat.  These are the extraordinary voices, along with the now legendary Plácido Domingo, in a grand celebration of opera scheduled for Sunday, 6 August at 9pm, as a tribute from the renowned Spanish singer to the 100th Edition of Verona Arena Festival.

Titled “Plácido Domingo in Opera”, the show takes the audience on a journey through the most famous pages of the great operatic repertoire and beyond. It begins with the powerful verismo genre, beautifully represented by Enkhbat and Villari singing the Prologue and the iconic “Vesti la giubba” from Pagliacci, respectively. Then, Sicilia enchants with “Io son l'umile ancella” from Adriana Lecouvreur, followed by Domingo's captivating performance of “Nemico della patria” from Andrea Chénier. The Symphony from Attila unveils the majestic world of Giuseppe Verdi, with Pertusi singing “O tu Palermo” from I vespri siciliani, and Villari and Domingo joining forces for the duet of Don Alvaro and Don Carlo di Vargas from La forza del destino, “Invano Alvaro ti celasti al mondo”.

The second part of the evening features splendid bel canto arias such as the mesmerising “Ah non credea mirarti” from La sonnambula (Pratt) and the soulful “Udite, o rustici” from L’elisir d'amore (Pertusi). The richness of Verdi's compositions continues with the powerful “Di quella pira l'orrendo foco” (Villari) and the evocative “Udiste? Come albeggi” (Sicilia and Domingo) from Il trovatore. Puccini's enchanting touch is felt through a rendition of Musetta's waltz from La bohème (Mazzola).

An orchestral Intermezzo of the famous zarzuela La boda de Luis Alonso opens doors to a variety of genres, and the show concludes with a delightful blend of Bernstein's “Tonight” from West Side Story (Domingo and Daria Rybak), “Glitter and be Gay” from Candide (Pratt), Franz Lehár's “Dein ist mein ganzes Herz” from Das Land des Lächelns, (Domingo), and another zarzuela piece: “No puede ser” from La taberna del puerto, with which Plácido Domingo bids farewell to the audience. Conductor Francesco Ivan Ciampa leads the Orchestra of the Fondazione Arena di Verona.

The legendary Spanish singer once again takes centre stage this summer at the Arena, where he made his debut in 1969 and has been returning consistently ever since.

In case of any unforeseen cancellation, Placido Domingo in Opera - Arena 100 will be rescheduled for the following day, 7 August 2023.
