The return of the 'King of tenors' Jonas Kaufmann to the Arena di Verona
And with him, at the Gala, two other stars, such as Sonya Yoncheva and Ludovic Tézier
Jonas Kaufmann in Opera - Arena 100
Sunday 20 August, 9.00 PM
Opera star Jonas Kaufmann returns to the Arena di Verona for the 100th Opera Festival, after his success as Radamès in Aida in 2022, and in the Gala that marked his debut in the Amphitheatre in 2021. The Bavarian tenor is once again the star of the Gala scheduled for Sunday, 20 August at 9 p.m., when he will perform the roles in which he has starred on the most prestigious stages around the world, such as Otello, Andrea Chénier and Mario Cavaradossi in Puccini's Tosca. A special evening that will sweep the audience from the most famous operatic pages to Leonard Bernstein's musical West Side Story, and film soundtracks such as The Mission, composed by Ennio Morricone, and Gladiator, written by Hans Zimmer, to which Kaufmann will also dedicate his next record release entitled 'The Sound of Movies'.
Alongside the tenor, the Arena stage will host two other big stars, such as soprano Sonya Yoncheva (who also stars during the Festival in Tosca directed by Hugo De Ana) and baritone Ludovic Tézier (who also sings in Verona in Aida directed by Stefano Poda, in Rigoletto directed by Antonio Albanese and in the historic Traviata reinterpreted by Frano Zeffirelli). Conducting the Orchestra of the Fondazione Arena di Verona is the German Jochen Rieder, already on the podium in the Gala with Kaufmann in 2021.
After the first part of the concert dedicated to Italian melodrama - with 'Recondita armonia' from Tosca, 'Già nella notte densa', 'Credo' and 'Dio! Mi potevi scagliar' from Othello, 'Nemico della patria' and 'Vicino a te' from Andrea Chénier - the second part ranges from Georges Bizet's Carmen to pages by Franz Lehár, Jacques Offenbach and popular pieces such as Ernesto De Curtis' 'Non ti scordar di me' and the famous 'Somewhere' and 'Maria' from Bernstein's West Side Story, 'Nella fantasia' from Morricone's The Mission and 'Nelle tue mani' from Zimmer's Gladiator.
In case of any unforeseen cancellation, ‘Jonas Kaufmann in Opera - Arena 100’ will be rescheduled for the following day, 21 August 2023.
